Little Ole Opry is a Country Western Musical Variety show fashioned after “Grand Ole Opry” and “Hee Haw.” It has been running, nonstop, for a quarter of a century. Its focal point is a live band, so “with it” that they can learn a tune just by listening to a CD and charting it. We are so fortunate to have Dave Ford as our leader. He was in the original band when the show started…but I’m not saying anything about his advancing age!!!! He was 5 years old when Opry first started, but a music genius! (Is that OK Dave?)

Dave leads the band on guitar and vocals and is joined by another veteran of the early years on Pedal Steel Guitar, Dwain Rayburn. Doug Jones can tickle those ivories like nobody’s business, plays a lovely guitar and sings like an angel. Other superb musicians will complete the lineup each week to provide a professional sound. Fred Corbett may even join us once in a while on banjo and vocals. It is a well rounded group with incredible sound.

we have assigned a theme to each Saturday night performance. The dates and themes of the first show are: July 11, “Classic Cars and Famous Stars.” Try to find a song that is about driving a car, or being in a car, or about the car itself. The “Famous Stars” part means to impersonate someone who is a Country singer. The obvious would be Dolly Parton with a wasp figure and blonde wig, and then sing one of her songs…men included. Way back, Jill Hanson and I had matching outfits and blonde wigs and inflatable chests, and we sang “Here they come again” as we vigorously pumped up the chests during the choruses. Not to be outdone, Dick Booth wore a similar dress and a string mop as a wig!

July 18 will be themed “50’s and Rock and Roll.” The Young Bucs will be there to entertain as well as the regular Opry family. Look for songs either Country or Rock and Roll in the Pre-Beatles era. Ok, “60’s” as well! July 25 will feature songs from “Hot New Country.” This would include anything you can hear now-a-days on the radio. The final themed show will be on August 1 and will feature “Western and Bluegrass” music. The Young Bucs Bluegrass group, and Hudson’s Ridge usually grace our stage, and if you like to sing Gospel, this is where you would put those songs. If you just can’t find a song to fit any of the themes, it’s OK to sing any Country song during any of the themed shows.

The final weekend is called “Best of Opry” and there will be 2 shows that weekend. It will be the same show Saturday night and Sunday at 2pm. This is the show where I get to decide, as Director, which song, during the regular season, was your best, and we showcase that song. It’s a fabulous show, and that’s why we have two on one weekend—so everyone can get a chance to see it.
