Directors Notes, Play it Again, Patti!

By Josie Reid

“Play it Again, Patti” now in Rehearsal

“Reprise” is an interesting word. A lot of things are reprised; fashion, relationships, music, but I’m going to talk about theatre.

LTOB is currently in rehearsal for a show called “Play it Again, Patti”. I’m sure you may wonder, who the heck is Patti?

Well, Patti is Patti West, and she was a Director of many shows at Little Theatre on the Bay. Block Busters! She could bring together multitudes of production people, actors, musicians, dancers and put on a show that would sell out show after show.

She was always on the cutting edge, sometimes even a little ahead of the cutting edge in her choice of Musicals. My relationship with Patti started when she was Assistant Director to Pat Eisenbarth during the production of “Cabaret” in 1980. I played a very patriotic Hooker “Fraulein Kost” in the show, which was my first LTOB production. We got to know each other a little better and I eventually became one of the Ladies of LTOB. We were a core who got things done.

Patti directed “Oklahoma”, “South Pacific”, Guys and Dolls” “Gypsy”, “Into the Woods”, “the Boyfriend”, and my favorite: “Little Shop of Horrors”, along with many straight plays. They’re called straight plays because they’re strictly talking and dialogue, instead of singing and dancing. I’m sure she would have gone on directing again and again, but she had an untimely death.

I thought it would be a great tribute to Patti to put together a reprise of some of her Musicals, and I presented it to the Board of Directors.  Now we are in production. My idea was to invite original cast members to “Reprise their roles” and fill in the gaps with a wonderful cast of singers. So that’s what you’re going to get. Two hours of solid entertainment.

“Play it Again, Patti“, features 3 major Musicals: Oklahoma”, “South Pacific”, and “Little Shop of Horrors”, with 5 or 6 numbers from each show tied together by a few lines of dialogue to keep the story making sense. I’ve peppered “Olios” between the Musicals using Original cast members from “the Boyfriend“, “Gypsy“, and “Guys and Dolls”.

The musical accompaniment will be live and features Janice Kendall as Musical Director, with Ida Jo Gates assisting on keyboard. I’m building the sets and painting the drops…just like I did with the original productions. It’s really giving me a lot of time to reflect on what a contribution that wonderful gal gave to our community.

The show will be one weekend only, May 9, 10, and 11 to accommodate the out-of -towners who are coming back to reprise their roles, so circle that date on your calendar right now so you won’t miss it.

Friday and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm. I’ll fill you in on more, as we get closer to the show date.  Don’t miss this tribute to a wonderful gal.

It’s finally here!  Mothers Day weekend, and the opening night of “Play it Again, Patti”.

My cast has been working hard to get this show ready and they are itching to get an audience.  We will be having our dress rehearsal mid-week and then Friday, May 9, at 8pm is Opening Night.

It will begin with a get together of friends in the Little Theatre on the Bay lobby when the doors open at 7pm.  Original cast members will be waiting to greet friends who come to pay tribute to our dear, departed Patti West.  After 30 minutes of visiting, the cast will go downstairs to get ready for “Magic time” and a slide show presentation will take place in the Auditorium.

Martha Houghton has prepared a wonderful collage of photos from scrapbooks all over the region, which will be accompanied by musical selections prepared by Les Engle, and at 8pm the show will begin with the “Oklahoma“ segment.

Our Curley will be played by Roger Sims and he will be accompanied by the Original Laurey, Luanne May.  We gradually add more and more characters, including the original Ado Annie, Theresa Erskine and the original Gerty, Jill Hanson.  Marcia Marchant was in the Original production as a high schooler, and played a girl, but we had her take the role of Aunt Eller.  Eventually we have a whole stage full of actors heading to the box social singing the Oklahoma theme song.  It is fabulous!

After Marty Crouse reprises her role in the Boyfriend in an Olio to accommodate the scene change, we will see some original characters from the South Pacific segment.  Connie Nipgen reprises her role as Bloody Mary, and her assistant Barbara Chilla takes the stage also.  The honey bun group number will knock your sox off!  And our 4 Nellie’s do a fabulous job.

At intermission we will change the scenes for the Little Shop of Horrors segment, and move from the South Seas to Skid Row.  Before the Little Shop segment, Luanne May reprises her role from “Guys and Dolls“, and Ken and myself perform our duet from “the Boyfriend”

During the Little Shop segment, Theresa Erskine reprises her Audrey, and Jeff Cragun reprises the voice of Audrey 2.  Ken Erskine is fabulous as Orin Scrivello, the Sadistic Dentist.  The Original plants made 22 years ago even make an appearance, after a little maintenance and upkeep by Jan Stoffel.

This show will only last one weekend so you need to reserve your seats as soon as possible.  Hey, why not take Mom to the Matinee at 2pm on Sunday.  Mothers love that stuff and you will too!

Tickets can be obtained by calling 541-756-4336 on your cell phone or land line or 877-756-3446 if you’re out of the calling area.  Or visit us on the web at www.ltob.net and hit the “Play it Again, Patti” link.
